For example, foreground colors in nature appear more saturated than those in the distance, because the thickness of the atmosphere softens them. So in our painting we can use the purer pigments for nearby objects, and can de-saturate each pigment (by adding its color compliment) to suggest objects farther away.
And of course, nearby objects tend to appear larger and more in focus than those in the distance. So the painter can adjust sizes accordingly, and can blur far-away edges to enhance the effect. The effect of distance can also be suggested conceptually, even when keeping saturation and focus the same throughout, by overlapping objects. The mind’s eye will assume that the complete object is “in front” and that partial objects are “behind” even when the objects are the same size. Diane Lee Moomey 2019 |
