Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Organizational Values Statement
The Coastal Arts League is a nonprofit public art gallery and artist collective which seeks to foster diversity in its exhibitors and members. We welcome artists who bring additional dimensions and world views to the collective’s artistic and collaborative ideals. (Adopted in 2021) Mission Recognizing the power of arts and artists to create positive change in the world, our Mission is to encourage and support artists with tools to make a living and a life, and to build a community full of meaning, joy, and connection. (adopted 2023) Vision Our vision is to be the Public Art Gallery of Half Moon Bay, providing access to visual art, in an environment where diversity is valued and celebrated. Our organization exists to enhance and improve the quality of life for our community. We support visual artists by providing opportunities to show their work, practice their art, and meet other artists. We partner with schools and other community organizations on the Coastside to provide programs for students and adults, so that Coastside residents have access to socially and emotionally healthy activities through visual arts. Why does it Matter?
Recognizing that groups function in silos, we set out with intention to integrate diverse individuals and collaborate with community organizations. Each year new members join us and new board members step into leadership positions. |
It is not enough to adopt a statement or policy. We must continue to talk about our values, because social change is a journey and our actions demonstrate our values. We are different in many ways, and each of us has multiple identities. It is important to acknowledge how our life experiences have shaped us. Conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion require courage, openness, listening skills, patience, honesty, acknowledging bias, and challenging assumptions. In the Senior art classes, the sense of belonging encourages informal conversations that lead to understanding the lived experiences of the participants. Collaborating with the public school system ensures that diverse groups are represented. Collaborating with teachers helps us understand the needs of their students. "Art is a channel for awareness and appreciation of social justice issues."
The arts enhance our lives, our economy, our civic assets and even give voice to our common triumphs and tragedies. ~ Dave Pine, County Supervisor
